Placental / Fetal Tissue

Description
Includes culture of fetal and/or placental tissue and preparation of Giernsa-banded chromosomes. Chromosome analysis includes two banded karyotypes, detailed examination of ten cells, and 20 cells total counted.

Indications
• stillborn
• fetal demise
• miscarriage
• fetal malformations
• intrauterine growth retardation
• cultured fetal cells can be used for special biochemical or molecular analyses as indicated by the clinical situation

Specimen Requirements
0.5 -1.0 cc fetal thigh muscle and skin and/or 1.0 cc placental tissue (chorionic villi). Obtain tissue in sterile manner and place in sterile media or normal saline. Culture media is supplied by GLG. Label tube or container with patient's name and laboratory control number. May be refrigerated overnight. Specimen cannot be frozen. Specimen cannot be fixed in formalin. Send to Great Lakes Genetics within 24 hours of tissue collection.
